FIRE Roadmap.
Plan your path to Financial Independence and Early Retirement.
Understanding FIRE Calculator
The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) framework helps you calculate the exact amount of capital you need invested to generate enough passive income to cover your living expenses indefinitely.
The FIRE Roadmap helps you visualize your journey toward financial independence. By analyzing your current savings rate, expected returns, and target retirement expenses, you can determine exactly when you can safely leave the workforce.
The 4% Rule
The foundation of the FIRE movement is the "4% Rule," derived from the Trinity Study. It suggests that if you withdraw 4% of your invested portfolio in the first year of retirement, and adjust that amount for inflation in subsequent years, your portfolio has a very high probability of lasting 30 years or more.
Determining Your FIRE Number
Your "FIRE Number" is your target portfolio size. Based on the 4% rule, you can calculate this by taking your annual expected expenses in retirement and multiplying by 25 (since 4% goes into 100% 25 times). For example, if you need $40,000 a year to live comfortably, your FIRE number is $1,000,000.
The Power of the Savings Rate
Your savings rate is the most critical variable in determining when you can retire. A higher savings rate not only increases the amount going into your portfolio, but it also means you are living on less, which lowers the target FIRE number you need to reach.
Sequence of Returns
It is important to remember that the stock market is volatile. Retiring right before a major market crash can negatively impact your portfolio's longevity. Many people mitigate this risk by aiming for a lower withdrawal rate (like 3% or 3.5%) or by holding a cash buffer to avoid selling stocks during a market downturn.

Is the 4% rule safe for India?
The 4% rule was based on US historical data. In India, with higher inflation and higher long-term growth potential, many experts recommend a more conservative 3% or 3.25% withdrawal rate for the same safety margin.
What is the difference between Lean FIRE and Fat FIRE?
Lean FIRE involves achieving independence with a minimal, frugal budget. Fat FIRE targets a lifestyle that allows for luxury, travel, and higher-end consumption without financial stress.
